Square feet, square metres, acres and hectares
Convert floor area and land area in one place — square feet to square metres for a built-up figure, acres to hectares for a piece of land, and the smaller metric units underneath. Property here is advertised in square feet while land is titled in acres and hectares, so the two habits meet inside a single listing and one of them always has to be converted. Square foot to Square metre
92.90304m²
1,000 ft² = 92.90304 m²
1 ft² = 0.09290304 m²
1 m² = 10.7639104167 ft²
A square foot is 0.3048 m squared, which is 0.09290304 m² exactly. So a square metre is 10.7639 square feet — the length ratio of 3.28 has to be squared, not reused.

An acre is 43,560 square feet — historically a furlong by a chain, 660 ft × 66 ft. That is 4,046.8564224 m², or a square about 63.6 m on each side.
A hectare is exactly 10,000 m² — a square 100 m on each side. It is 2.471 acres, so the two land measures are close enough to be mistaken for each other and far enough apart to matter on a price.

A square mile is exactly 640 acres, which is the “section” of the American land survey grid — the reason so many rural land parcels are a round fraction of one.
How it works
- 1
Type the area
Enter the number and pick its unit. There is no Convert button — the answer recalculates on every keystroke, and the panel beside it shows the same area in all ten units at once.
- 2
Work out the area first if you only have the sides
This page converts an area, not a shape. A room 12 ft by 15 ft is 180 square feet, so multiply the two sides yourself and enter the result. For an L-shaped floor, split it into rectangles, work each one out and add them together before entering the total.
- 3
Square the ratio, once
A metre is 3.28 feet, but a square metre is 10.76 square feet — the length ratio has to be squared. This is the most common way an area conversion goes wrong, and the answer still looks plausible when it does, which is exactly why the mistake survives long enough to reach a listing.
- 4
Check it against the tables
Square feet to square metres across ordinary apartment sizes, square metres back the other way, acres to hectares, and the larger land measures side by side. Every cell is generated by the same code that answers the field above, so the reference and the calculator cannot drift apart.
Frequently asked questions
How big is an acre, really?
An acre is 43,560 square feet, or 4,046.8564224 square metres. If you would rather picture it: that is a square about 63.6 metres on each side, or a strip 660 ft long by 66 ft wide — which is where the number came from. An acre was one furlong by one chain, roughly the area one man with one ox could plough in a day, and the awkward 43,560 is simply what those two old lengths multiply out to. Ten acres is a little over four hectares.
Why is property advertised in square feet when land is in acres and hectares?
Because the two habits came from different places and neither gave way. Built-up area — the part of a house or apartment you actually live in — has been quoted in square feet for as long as anyone has been selling them, so 1,000 sq ft and 1,200 sq ft are the sizes buyers recognise on sight. Land is a separate matter: it is surveyed and titled in acres and hectares. A development site is therefore described in acres and the units built on it are described in square feet, so one project routinely uses both. Converting between them is the whole reason this page exists: 1,000 sq ft is 92.9 m², and one acre is 43,560 sq ft.
How many square feet are in a square metre?
10.763910417. It is not 3.28 — that is the figure for length. Area conversions square the length ratio, so 3.28084² gives 10.76, and skipping that step leaves an answer roughly three times too small while still looking like a sensible number. The same squaring works the other way in a more useful direction: a room 10% longer on each side is not 10% bigger, it is 21% bigger, because 1.1 × 1.1 is 1.21.
What is the difference between square metres and metres squared?
In careful use, none — both mean m². In ordinary speech they come apart badly. “Three square metres” is an area of 3 m². “Three metres squared” is usually said to mean a square three metres on each side, which is 9 m², three times larger. The safe habit is to put the number first and the unit last: three square metres, or else a three-metre square. Where a figure is ambiguous, ask which was meant before pricing anything on it.
How many acres are in a hectare?
2.471053814671653 acres. A hectare is exactly 10,000 square metres — a square 100 m on a side — while an acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so a hectare is about two and a half acres. In the other direction an acre is 0.4047 hectares. The two are close enough that the words get used loosely and far enough apart that a ten-hectare site described as ten acres understates it by about 60%.
Why is a square mile 640 acres?
Because a mile is 80 chains and an acre is one chain by one furlong, a furlong being ten chains. Multiply that out and a square mile holds exactly 640 acres, or 2,589,988.110336 m². The round 640 is why the American land survey cuts land into square-mile “sections” and why so many rural parcels are a half, a quarter or a sixteenth of one — 640 divides tidily for a long way, which is a convenience the metric side does not need because a square kilometre is simply 100 hectares.
Is anything I type uploaded or saved?
No. The arithmetic runs in your own browser, there is no server behind this site to upload anything to, and this page writes nothing to your device — no history, no saved figures. Close the tab and it is gone.
